Castle Glennayre lurked atop its low ridge, still and quiet in the pale moonlight, as the group from the Great Palace approached. It looked more like a mausoleum than a castle. The towers jutted menacingly against the nighttime sky. Fog writhed at the bases of the stone walls, which loomed tall and dark in the night. Alannys looked at it all with nervous apprehension. Another dark building in the dead of the night, shrouded in creepy fog. Why was she always sneaking into dark buildings with creepy fog? Maybe this wasn’t such a good idea.

She had left this place under cover of darkness only a few nights before, and yet it seemed a long time ago. How had things changed so much so quickly?

On Grayble’s advice they dismounted. They led their horses up the ridge to the back of the castle on foot, hoping not to create much noise. Of course Lord Malrec would be expecting them, but that didn’t mean they had to announce their arrival to him. The odds were already against them; they needed every advantage they could get.

The back of the castle was as dark and silent as the front. Even the stablehouse was completely black, and Alannys would have sworn no one at all was awake except for a single light burning in the tower window, spilling out in odd slats, as though the window was covered. Evidently Delline found it as difficult to sleep there as she had.

Captain Grayble opened the kitchen door easily and soundlessly. Alannys felt silly for being surprised. Lord Malrec planned to recapture her, and he was hardly going to lock the doors. This had to be right up there in the list of the stupidest things she had ever done—but the queen had left her precious little choice.

The group paused for a moment in the kitchen so their eyes could adjust to the darkness inside. Grayble turned to regard them all, squinting to make them out. When he spoke, his voice was so low Alannys felt her ears were squinting to catch the words. “Your Majesty, can you find your way to Princess Delline’s room?”

Dorramon glanced through the large arch and nodded. “I believe so. A lamp burned upstairs, and the castle is small. The tower should be easy to find.”

“Very well. You can go there and find your sister. Arch-Prince Raman and I will escort the Lady Alannys to the gallery and see her safely through her painting. Is that acceptable to everyone?”

There were nods all around. Alannys could just make out the copper countertops gleaming dimly when Captain Grayble turned and led them out. Less accustomed than the others to stealth, Alannys made whispering sounds with her boots when she walked. She concentrated on stepping lightly, and tried to breathe as silently as possible. Tension enshrouded her like a tangible thing, and she was shaking all over.

Grayble pushed the big study door silently open and flickering, dancing light spilled out into the hallway. The fire burned cheerfully,
